Who We Are

History and Background

The YOVI Ghana LBG was founded in 2006 and was officially registered as a non-profit, youth-focused organization in 2009, having identified the numerous challenges facing young people in Ghana. The organization is headquartered in Tamale, the regional capital of the Northern Region, with a satellite office in Sang, the capital of the Mion District of the Northern Region.

YOVI Ghana LGB was founded by young people who showed concern for the plight of the rural population in the Northern Region of Ghana, especially the conditions of many youths, women, children, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), and pledged their commitment to work together to improve the prospects and opportunities of these vulnerable groups.

The organisation works to empower young people to become active citizens in their communities and to create positive change, providing mentorship, leadership development, and educational opportunities to help develop the skills they need to become successful and engaged members of their communities. YOVI also works to raise awareness about the issues facing young people in Ghana and to advocate for policy change that will benefit them. This is done through partnerships with schools, community groups, and government agencies to ensure that young people have access to the resources they need to succeed, creating a safe and supportive environment for them to grow and thrive.

As a youth-focused organization with several years of experience in the field of development, the organization operates in a wide range of areas, from food security and agricultural development to sexual and reproductive health and rights, democracy and human rights, gender equality and women’s economic empowerment, peacebuilding and prevention of violent extremism, governance, and civic education. As a non-profit organization, YOVI works directly with communities and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in catchment districts, providing business development services towards the socio-economic transformation of communities

To enhance operational synergy and foster partnerships for innovation and best practices, YOVI works with a number of coalitions/networks at national, regional, and continental levels addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the ACCESS Coalition, Girls Not Brides (GNB), the Ghana CSOs on SDGs Sub-platform, the Global Network on Disaster Reduction (GNDR), the West Africa Child Rights Coalition (WACRC), the Child Safeguarding Alliance Ghana (CSA Ghana), and the Civil Society Organizations Forum (CSO Forum) of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC).
